Ship Reviews

The customer service was excellent, as was the food. My only wish is that the excursions were longer so we could enjoy each city more. I felt rushed and it’s hard to remember everything we saw, which was beautiful! The crew were friendly and took care of all our needs. The bathrooms are a bit small, so be prepared to hit your head on the wall a few times. The guides were all knowledgeable, and some took us to see little off the road gems. You don’t feel the ship moving after a day or two, so motion sickness is not an issue. The drinks and food are never ending. I’ve never had so much to eat in my life! The Chiefs Dinner was so creative, and a fabulous experience for my taste buds. They really go all out to make the experience fun and creative. A must try for your first river cruise!

Everything was exceptional from the ship to the staff, the excursions, the food. AmaWaterways took care of us from the moment we stepped off the plane until we were in line waiting to go through airport security to return home. I have never felt so pampered and happily exhausted from all the wonderful shore adventures. We took advantage of all the included excursions and the excursions additional excursions. They were all wonderful and the local guides were knowledgeable and interesting, providing a lot of local interest. The Chef's table was a fun experience with lots of great food and wine. The local food options were delicious and for the less adventurous, there were always familiar foods to choose. We chose a stateroom that had a French and outside balcony and 210 sq.ft. It was a very efficient use of space. We had room to store our luggage and enough room to store our clothes. It was so wonderful to watch the local homes on the shore as the ship passed.

This cruise was the first Wellness Cruise. I am a vegetarian/pescatarian and was happy with the meal choices for vegetarians. I participated in the morning exercise classes. I wish there were more yoga classes. The Wellness aspect of the cruise was only a portion of the cruise and there were other options for cruisers not interested. The special entertainment, a singer at one port and a violin and guitar group at another port were fun and entertaining. We went on the optional Strauss Concert in Vienna. The music was beautiful but the seats were so hard it was uncomfortable. The service was excellent. There were multiple excursions at each port and all were included. Because it was a wellness cruise there was a spa visit in Budapest. The spa was exclusively for AMA for 4 hours. So many on the ship went to the spa it was a little crowded. I hope in the future they split the visit into smaller groups for a shorter time, since it was the first time they had done this I hope they will modify it in the future. Disembarkation was easy we opted for the transfer to the Munich airport because we were traveling on our own after the cruise. It was easy to get to Munich city from the airport and an AMA guide helped us get to the train for our transfer.

Our cruise on the AmaLea was nothing short of excellent. The food, accommodations, staff, fitness, outings, and vessel were all far above expectations. We had concerns that as a couple in our upper thirties that we would be too young, but we were blown away by the activities and tailoring of events. Compared to other boats we saw, we appeared to be the most active excursions with a great night life. My only quibble would be it would be nice to get a glass of wine or beer complimentary all day versus just at meal time or the cocktail hour, but the drinks were reasonably priced. The meals were excellent and I really enjoyed the local focus on the food with descriptions of where it came from. I also thought that the open seating allowed for groups to organically meet and eat together which increased the social atmosphere. The staff were fantastic and so accomodating from the cruise director, fitness coach, to the waiters. I also greatly appreciated the very reasonably priced laundry, I could have taken half the clothes I did, and will for my next cruise. I also thought all of the tour guides and historians that led excursions or came aboard the boat were excellent. Overall, I'd highly recommend Amawaterways and the AmaLea to any thirty something or up that is looking to experience the danube river in an active and social way.

We took our first river cruise on AmaLea, Budapest to Vilshofen. We really enjoyed it. Service was friendly and expert, staff were always helpful. Food was wonderful, including the special chef's tasting dinner. Only one exception - my wife ordered a poached egg one morning, always a test of a kitchen. It was perfectly done. But cold. There are no tables for two. Plenty of tables for four so if you take one of them, you likely will have no table mates. Tour guides were all excellent and very knowledgeable. We got lots of history for a part of the world that was new to us. Mind you, looking back there was castles, churches and narrow medieval streets every day and we are left trying to remember what happened where. Off the ship every morning at 9:00 for a tour either on foot or by bus. We were slightly surprised that 95% of our fellow passengers were American - not a complaint, just an observation. We had expected some portion of Brits, Canadians, Europeans and maybe Aussies. We did make friends with some lovely people. Evening entertainment in the lounge was provided by local performers and was always very enjoyable. For this time of year we were blessed with nice weather so we got lucky.
