Ship Reviews

The ship was very well keep up and clean, rooms service was also very good and always a pleasure to come back to after an excursion. Staff was always very friendly and pleasant. Breakfast got boring after a few days of the same eggs & bacon, though they did offer a custom ordered omelet. The sausages where not up to American standards, lighter fruit and yogurt were good, but the pastry's were very mediocre, this after they made a big deal of their pastry chef working all night to bake them, no better than store bought I thought. Lunch and dinner were considerably better, but not deserving of the price point for the cruise I didn't think. The excursions for the most part where lead by energetic guides, though would have liked more focus on the history and less personal story telling or filler chatter. Happy hour before dinner was very nice, but bar service was poor and slow if you didn't want that days cocktail selection. Wine with lunch and dinner was I thought was a good selection with two whites and two reds offered and they mirrored the country we were traveling through to some degree. I'm not a wine with lunch/dinner person, but thoroughly enjoyed having it. The worst part of the cruise was the onboard entertainment, which was a generation behind in the music he played, it would have excited my parents (I'm 70), but did not fit the crowd at all. After dinner participation at the lounge started strong but quickly dwindle to a very few couples as the cruise progressed. Even the "famous" singer brought on board for one evening suffered the same generational mis-match problem, but he did have a good voice. Their recommended tipping levels were much higher than say Viking's and I certainly wouldn't have left they much if not for my wife's' insistence to do so, just because it was the "recommended" amount. If you had paid the tips in advance you would have avoided the exchange rate which made them after the fact almost 20% higher in USD terms. I liked how the excursions gave you the option of a gentle, regular or sometimes aggressive walking pace, but if you pick gentle you need to ask what they are deleting from the walk, because most times that was not disclosed and we missed seeing something we'd have loved to have seen. They offered the biking option which many people enjoyed. One of the too few of days the ship sailed during the day which is understandable, but there should have been a historical speaker on top that could have explained what we were seeing how it came about and why. Almost all of the last half of the cruise the top deck was closed as they had to put down the umbrellas, chairs, etc. due to low bridge clearance issues, not something they tell you about in their trip descriptions. And we had to change boats once due to low water, which was handled very professionally without any required effort on our part except to pack it all up and unpack it. The crew did a great job also disembarking at the end of the cruise, we just put our luggage out in the morning and they took it to the bus or private driver for you. We didn't book any of the transportation options, but at the hotel - Miriam the cruise director saw us and offered to take us on the bus from the hotel to the ship for free as they had room. Very nice, Miriam was very very good throughout the cruise. We had a great time, and it well deserves a 4 out of 5 rating, and could easily have been a 5 rating if not for the entertainment and the weak breakfast offerings.

Crew was best I’ve ever experienced, except for cruise directors (not part of AMA staff), hence the rating. Ship was clean, efficiently designed, well operated/ decorated. Otherwise, food and wine was disappointing on many days. Little high end food, creamy dressing for ‘classic’ Caesar, bland appetizers, table quality, low alcohol wines, little garlic in escargot… excursions okay but some repetitions with guides, gentle walks included hills and steps. Our 2 week cruise billed as 2 one week cruises; expected to pay tips & bill end of 1st week & end of cruise. Expected to exit cruise 1 week in for day so folks could ‘clean.’ Refused! Cruise directors did not offer any info on sights I didn’t already know. Did not tip cruise directors & 2nd Director cancelled our taxi and delayed our leaving. Driver that arrived was afghani, didn’t communicate well, or know how to get to Basel airport, overcharged us & demanded cash. No sundries offered in gift shop. Time for meals changed by as much as an hour due to port itineraries. Again, crew outstanding, smart, helpful, funny, fast, stellar!

The ship, the crew, the food, our tour guides--all first-rate! Everything was included--all food and drink, a great choice of tours from less- to more-active, and wellness activities. The staff, from the captain, hotel manager, and cruise manager on down, were helpful and polite to a fault. Our tour guides were both helpful and knowledgeable in every case. An added bonus to the trip was our fellow tourers. We made many, many good friends along the way, enjoying meals, casual conversations, and tours together. This was our first touring experience, and to be honest, we had always been skeptical of boat tours. This tour changed our mind, at least about these charming small boat tours. We are now thinking about our next voyage through Europe on an AMA vessel. Much to look forward to! If there were one thing to change, it would be to have a bit more time to spend in some of the charming small German and French villages. A truly memorable experience!

The service was outstanding!!! Roy greated me every morning and every evening. When I got to my cabin at the end of the day, there was a picture of him on my TV screen wishing me a relaxing evening and a good rest. The excursions were well-planned with excellent guides. Our fitness leader held great classes. I loved the yoga! Ilko made every 'meeting' fun. He was always informative and funny. My cabin was so comfortable! I loved having the TV and computer for lazy evenings. And it was always so clean. Several unexpected perks were available. There were umbrellas in the room (and it did rain!). Extra blankets in the closet. A comfy bathrobe. Instant hot water in the shower with a handheld shower head and a rain shower head. The spa was wonderful! Meri gave a great and relaxing massage. I highly recommend Amawaterways!! I loved every minute.
