AmaDouro

The popularity of Portugal and Spain’s Douro Valley cannot be ignored—that’s why we debuted our spectacular AmaDouro, adding a second ship to the region and enabling even so more guests to enjoy this experience! Like our other ships, AmaDouro features spacious, elegantly appointed staterooms, most of which include balconies to take in views of the breathtaking hills and terraced vineyards along the river. Staterooms also include Entertainment-On-Demand, featuring free high-speed Internet access, unlimited Wi-Fi, movies, music and English-language TV stations; climate-controlled air conditioning; and an in-room safe. AmaDouro’s Panoramic Lounge is a stylish and inviting space to enjoy a glass of wine or a cocktail along with our nightly entertainment. The ship also features a massage room, fitness room, sun-deck swimming pool and a gift shop, as well as the culinary delights of the Main Restaurant, where you’ll be able to sample the region’s famous Port wine.

Ship Reviews

We recently sailed the Amadoura and loved the entire trip. Food and service were outstanding. Excursions were very nice. It was our first time on a river cruise and it was all we expected. Scenery was beautiful and going through the locks so very interesting. Highly recommend for a relaxing trip. I would have enjoyed more athletic excursions such as biking options or more vigorous hiking. The daily fitness stretch could have been more intense. One morning a fellow passenger led us in a very good yoga session. Perhaps for fitness activitie could be offered. I was very impressed with disembarkation and how taxis etc were arranged for all passengers if requested. Food options for all meals was varied. I enjoyed the ability of having buffet at breakfast and lunch as well made to order meals. We did not go hungry. I was even able to get two entrees one evening! The wine was outstanding and enjoyed having the sommelier explain where the vintage was from and what the white and red paired well with.

The Douro River valley is gorgeous and is a UNESCO site. AMA does a great job in structuring this cruise. Unlike many river cruises we took, on this one we cruised by day and did shore excursions in the afternoons. This allowed us to take in the beautiful scenery and experience the multiple locks. The excursions were a mix of historic sites, homes, palaces, and numerous wine tastings! If you have never experienced the wines of Portugal, you will be impressed. It is not only the Port but also the table wines. We also had an olive oil tasting. Learned a lot about this other product of Portugal. The food on board was delicious, and we had the chance to taste Portuguese cuisine. For those who are not as gastronomically ambitious, more general cuisines were also served. One thing we need to confirm with our travel agent is the location of our room. We were on the top level and had a balcony; unfortunately, we were on the side of the ship that either docked next to another ship or looked out at the dock if we were the first boat. While cruising, we found it much more enjoyable sitting at the bow of the ship off the lounge. My husband loved the fact that AmaDouro had rocking chairs there. My husband and I really wished, during the shore excursions that gave us 'free time,' that the free time was a bit longer. Most of the time it was enough time to locate the restrooms, stand in line there, and make it back to the meeting point. The one thing I'm conflicted about is the pre-cruise tour. Don't get me wrong, it was delightful to see the key sites in Lisbon and the monastery at Tomar. However, I was surprised that we were on our own for lunch and dinner. This was a drawback because I was forced to use my phone to check out local food places within our price range, without having to walk too much. This type of research and logistics on my part is one of the reasons we go for River Cruises; it is something I stress over. However, this did give everyone a chance to choose their own cuisine and price point, so there is that. Can't say anything about the evening entertainment since we tend to retire early. Wi-Fi/internet was a bit spotty in some areas due to the remoteness of the Douro River Valley, but it worked great most of the time. The local tour guides and staff were all top-notch. What I bought: Port (duh), almond liquor (almonds are one of Portugal's major crops), various polyphenol levels of olive oil, Spanish saffron, smoky paprika, and a painted tile from an old building from a flea market (the use of tiles on buildings is truly impressive to see). NOTE TO REMEMBER: Do NOT put any liquids in your carry-on. I had one of my olive oil cans confiscated at the Portuguese TSA. If you are a go-go-go type person, you may find this trip too relaxing. My husband, who is a go-go-go type person loved this cruise. It really is all about the journey.
