Ship Reviews

This was out first time on a small ship and many passengers were very positive about its size. Our feelings were more mixed. On the plus side we found the Veranda Cabin big enough, although the bathroom was probably the smallest we have encountered, and we loved having full height tables in the cabin and on the balcony for eating from. The room service breakfast menu was excellent, the always open small coffee shop was friendly and efficient, speciality dining very good, crew always visible 3 out of the 4 shows entertaining. The fourth was a poorly constructed advert for future destinations. The itinery was very good, and the main reason for our choosing this cruise, the speakers were OK and the Zulu evening very interesting. The Gospel Choir sounded like strangled cats. The orchestra was excellent, the band good though not used enough but the individual members of the show cast were simply not good enough for solo shows. Being on a small ship meant that it was easy to get around but, had I had mobility issues, I would have been very disappointed by the number of occasions on which only self service, on deck or the windows buffet café were available. There was the table service Patio Cafe on deck but this was often full. On day one, at sea, we were given a brunch buffet in the main dining room from 10am. The food was excellent and extensive but a sit down served breakfast was not on offer. On the next sea day we found that the main dining room shut at 9am and the windows buffet at 10am and when I say shut I do mean shut. Waiters would come around giving us notice that the buffet was about to shut in 10 minutes. On a cruise we expect to have a lie in and leisurely breakfast. Lunch was the same, shutting firmly at 2.30 which left anyone returning from a late morning excursion with the option of the coffee shop as the Patio would inevitably be full. The quality of the food in the venues was mostly good but very limited in the buffet. On one evening, in port, we decided to eat upstairs in the buffet for the view over the harbour to find it was Mexican Night which meant all the food, repeated on either side of the buffet centre was spicy, surely some variety could be provided. Finally, and the main reason we were totally put off Azamara, was its accounting system. On day 3 we were summoned to Guest Services to be told our credit card was declined. This being the same card which had paid our hotel bill in Cape Town. We were asked to draw cash from their ATM to pay, which we refused to do as the card was perfectly valid but they could not process it with a card machine in which we could put our numbers. We ended up on a 25 minute call, at their expense to our card company, to unfreeze the card which had seen transactions in Cape Town one day then Vancouver the next because that is where the boat processed its transactions. Over the course of the cruise we spoke to several people who had the same problem, all stressed and embarrassed by it and one employee at Guest Services even tried to claim the problem was common to all cruise lines including Princess, whom we have travelled the world with and never had a problem. On the last but one day we docked in Mauritius and used the card to pay for entrance fees on a day tour. The following day we were refused disembarkation because there was $9 outstanding which had been declined. Very strange as the intermediate bill had been taken. My furious husband retuned to the desk and paid in cash so we could get to our transfer point, meeting other passengers who had similarly been humiliated at security. This inefficiency is unforgivable and unacceptable if Azamara want customers to return. We went to our hotel and paid for that and other entrance fees on the same card without any query.

Captain, cruise director, white night, library, service & front desk usually excellent. Pool, bathroom tiny. Coffee shop gathering area crowded. Main entertainment venue freezing cold. Dinner started at six and entertainment at 9 pm and would have preferred each to begin one hour earlier. Nice massage. Food inconsistent: Breakfast, fruit and Thanksgiving meal delicious, brunch good, African buffet okay, lamb good, chicken & veggies okay, seafood unpredictable, pizza absolutely terrible. Complimentary wine often young & sharp. Shore excursions extremely expensive. Cape Town peninsula tour good, Pumba Reserve excellent, Tala Tala Reserve okay, hippo croc cruise disappointing, Reunion & Mauritious tours good. Madagascar was not good, ie, malaria area, shockingly poor, hawkers who pounded on van windows. Pre-cruise info sparse & inaccurate regarding Madagascar visa, ie, the ship takes care of visa requirements for everyone which is not the info given by phone to me prior to the trip. We have cruised many times including a world cruise. I liked this cruise overall but do not think the extra money we paid for an Azamara cruise was worth the money. However, am I sorry we went? No, Africa is amazing!

Azamara are an excellent company to cruise with, small ships, interesting itineraries (often ports the bigger ships can’t get into) good food in all venues but their biggest asset are their staff, always friendly and attentive, they clearly enjoy working for Azamara, it makes a difference. This was our third time with them and our third ship in the fleet. Quality is consistent. It’s worth saying that whilst the headline price is often above average it’s a great package and your bill at the end of your cruise is low to zero. We’ve booked another with them on board and the discounts on future cruises are great, well worth a look. Fellow passengers often seem to be travellers as opposed to those cruising for the experience, it’s about the ports you visit. Entertainment is fine (but that’s not why you travel with them) but the “White Night” and the Azamazing Evenings are brilliant and quite unique.
