Ship Reviews

Our party of 6 sailed the QE3 (Miami/Caribbean) 6-18 November 2025. We had not done a “regular” type “ocean” cruise since 2019 (pre-Covid), though my wife did a girls ocean cruise right after Covid, before they had adequately recovered, and which was somewhat disappointing for that reason. Many people we have talked to have alleged that service has diminished with all cruise companies. Ergo, we are unsure how to rate, comparatively, the diminished and different service we experienced on QE3. Compounding our uncertainty, 3 different couples we talked to and 2 individuals we overheard while on the QE3 said that Cunard was “their” best of all the popular cruise lines they have taken. That was not our impression, but again, that’s largely based on 6-7 pre-covid cruises. OVERALL IMPRESSION: It is a very beautiful, elegant ship. Service was subpar over all; less crowded and more personal; less of the activities we like; we’re not ballroom people, but the ship is; no children was great; above par food; more of a relaxing cruise. GENERAL CUSTOMER SERVICE, especially friendliness, was quite subpar initially. The crew seemed very stressed. This improved quite a bit after 2-3 days, but not up to our pre-Covid experiences. INFORMATION: Cunard doesn’t have an app per se, but rather a wi-fi accessible website where you can see activities and your bill and reservations etc. More of annoyance in our experience because of its intermittent accessibility and not being able to see activities when we wanted to. CHECK-IN/BOARDING: Good overall, generally quick - except: -Substantial wait for wheelchairs for many people which we found unacceptable. -Check-in counter middle section (regular boarding) went quickly, the right “priority” section went quickly, but the left section (also regular boarding) was only allowed to go to 1-2 receptionists for no apparent reason, at least that they or we could discern. Thanks to choosing the middle section, we effectively cut ahead of at least 25-30 people in the left section. ROOM Category BE - Britannia Balcony Stateroom (adjacent to stairway A, 1/3 distance back from bow) Gen: Robes/matching slippers; Good hairdryer; Safe; Phone; Turndown service; 24hr room service, Bon Voyage bottle of sparkling wine. TV: 36-40”?, Good interactive system; Great selection of movies, but freezes up periodically & and needs a restart or replug-in. Fridge: Good size, but filled with their stuff, which we removed and stowed above the desk. AC: 72-75F per calibrated thermometer, which was too warm for us, especially for sleeping. We received a 16” fan on day 2 after a 2nd complaint and the issue was finally resolved after approx. 36 hours. Thereafter it averaged a comfortable 68-69F for the remainder of the cruise. Thank you! Bed: Felt medium-firm. Decent as can be expected compared to our very nice, spoil-ourselves, very comfortable bed at home. Like many hotels, they give you 2 pillows of which a single is too thin, but doubled is too thick. I had to insert a wide air cushion in 1 pillow. Storage Space for our 4 large suitcases and 2 large backpacks of belongings was ample, including enough hangers. Steward: We first saw him on the 4th day and then barely saw him again until the last 4-5 days. Not a negative for us as we had no relevant problems or lack of anything, and we don’t care for excessive service or interaction. FOOD: VERY GOOD OVERALL. We ate half our 12 dinner meals in Brittania, the main dining room. Options were wide ranging and very well presented, though a little fancy for my tastes. We ate the other 6 dinner meals in the buffet, which was GENERALLY WELL-VARIED AND GOOD TASTING and slightly fancier than our previous cruises, which is not necessarily a positive for us. Small Annoyances: -Much fewer Mexican food options than normal. We never saw tacos or burritos and don’t recall any enchiladas. -Fewer non-spicy options. -Never saw fried shrimp and only saw regular potato salad and Cole slaw once. -Omelets were very often not cooked well-enough so the eggs were not runny. -Many individual meat servings were dry. -Only saw batter fried fish once, but it was surprisingly excellent. -AJ, OJ & Cranberry juice were only available in the a.m., and then only lemonade thereafter. -Ice machines constantly ran out resulting in short lines for scooping ice. Particular delights: -Chocolate chunk cookies and most especially white chocolate craisin cookies. -Many small deserts were very tasty. -Most of the better buffet options did not run out early -Golden Lion was excellent. -Fish sandwich and burgers were excellent at the grill on Lido deck. AMENITIES: LAUNDERETTE on each deck: 3 washers did well on 40min setting, 3 dryers did well too, usually took <30-40min using timer NOT auto dry. Neither easy nor hard to find open washers/dryers. Washer soap “sheets” provided. No dryer sheets. SPA/FITNESS: -Generally appropriate for this size of ship and type of clientele (older); usually not too crowded. -One sauna was way too hot for us and the other was way too warm (we are frequent users); very frustrating. -The 5 spa heated loungers were not warm enough AS USUAL (in 7 out of our 9 cruises). -Fitness equipment was generally appropriate and available with the exception of lacking a few exercise machines. -Acupuncture for motion sickness was successful for the 3rd out of 4 times I have done it aboard ship. However, this is the first time either of us have experienced more than a soft-sell to upgrade or increase services. As usual, never buy any service without buying the spa package. ENTERTAINMENT: Great for music and the musically inclined, but lacking in non-musical entertainment. The comedian, Tony Darrow(?) was excellent and hilarious the first time we saw him and okay the second time. Would have been the 3rd time, except we didn’t know he appeared earlier on that second day. DECK LOUNGING: Chairs were not as hard to get as on other cruises, but timing is still important and sea days are still a challenge because bogarts still claim chairs when they are not there, just not as bad on this cruise. NO CHILDREN: My favorite – woo hoooo!! We don’t mind small children, but the midlin’s tend to be obnoxious (just like our 3 kids were). PICTURES: The formal pictures we had taken were pretty good. The view and select system was better than previous “ocean” cruises, but still needs improvement. The picture package options went from 3 pics to 6 pics which was very annoying as all 3 couples in our group wanted 4 or 5 pics and they will not let you combine pics between couples. AFTERNOON TEA was cool despite our never being afternoon tea people. EXCURSIONS: Not enough time – which has always been the cruise norm. We can recommend (reviewed separately): -Puerto Rico: Loop Experiences’ “eBike Tour”, $95pp; -Barbados: Tiami’s Catamaran Turtle Snorkeling Tour, $120pp -St Maarten: Most especially the Rainforest Adventures at Rockland Estate zipline adventures, in particular the Flying Dutchman 2630 foot zipline (AWESOME!) and the Sentry Hill Zip Line which is 4, short (15seconds+), exciting ziplines, but no so much the Schooner tube ride. -St Lucia: Reduit Beach, Transportation $7pp, each way. DISEMBARKATION: We had the option to choose our time by returning a request, but we never responded and ended up getting 9am by default. No issues, very easy, no hassles.

I booked this cruise last minute to go with my sister. Got a lovely inside grand stateroom. Very spacious. Only complaints on stateroom are clingy shower curtain and terrible hangers. Be sure and bring your own. Twice daily turn down service is disappearing at this reasonable price point for cruises. And service was greatly appreciated. The ship was nice and quiet, plenty of space and beautiful public areas. Food was hit and miss in the Brittania with the exception of breakfast which was very good. Food was delicious in The Verandah, and solid in The Golden Lion. I was gifted a spa facial which was nice. I'm not one to comment on that as I'm just not a spa person, but the aesthetician was lovely..although not surprisingly she did her job and tried to sell me many products. Drinks were great, but expensive without drinks package. Cafe Carinthia is lovely for coffee and cocktails. Special shout out to barman Moyo! Internet service is not good. Cruised during Hurricane Melissa hitting Cuba. I loved our safety first itinerary changes to Honduras and Costa Maya. Didn't get off ship in Belize, so can't comment. Always love Cozumel! Truly wish we could have had one more port day without tender service. Lovely people from the USA, Germany, UK, Japan on cruise. Would I cruise on the Queen Elizabeth again? Yes, if price point remains reasonable. I have cruised on many cruiselines, have stayed in suites on HAL, MSC Yacht Club, NCL, Celebrity. Would not do Grills suites on Queen Elizabeth. But that's a personal choice. Don't need a butler, and really enjoy researching and making fun personal arrangements to experience ports. It did appear that ship was shortstaffed. That said, every crew member I encountered could not have been more helpful. I do think those who cruised pre-Covid, need to check their expectations or they will be disappointed. But, I've found that to be true of any cruiselines that were operating pre-Pandemic. Also, I'm not a gambler, but my sister found slots to be tight, not fun. Casino was really a ghost town. Ship does not seem geared towards children, so plus or minus depending on your viewpoint.

This was our first experience with Cunard, and we were very favorably impressed! We have sailed on Celebrity, Princess, Crystal, Disney & NCL. Cunard had an elegant and serene feel that we had not encountered before. We really liked it! This cruise officially started in Seattle, after finishing it’s Alaska run, but opened up boarding new passengers to its San Francisco and Los Angeles ports of call, presumably to help fill up the sailing before passing through the Panama Canal. We are within an hour’s drive of San Francisco so boarding for us was a quiet walk on in the early afternoon. We were in Balcony cabin aft, and it was a good location-quiet, with the exception of a random noise that sounded like ice dropping from your refrigerator. We finally realized it could only be coming from air in the plumbing. The bedding was extremely soft and comfortable. We had great weather the entire voyage, so the ship was very stable. Our capable Captain, Stephen Howarth, kept us on course and briefed us once daily at noon regarding our position and giving us context and a bit of history. Our room steward, Ruel, was like a Hogwart’s house elf; he came and went unseen yet kept everything spotless. The recent spring 2025 refurbishment of Queen Elizabeth was very nice, showcasing rich upholstery fabrics, carpeting, and draperies. We were Britannia Class, and usually ate in that dining room, which is stunning, and the service was excellent. We did not try the Verandah restaurant, or other pop-up added surcharge venues. The buffet always had a good selection of choices, including fresh sushi. The Lido Pool Grill hot dogs and hamburgers were very good, when you just wanted a casual dinner out in the sea air. We don’t drink alcohol, so we appreciated Cunard’s policy of allowing soft drinks and water to be brought onboard. We brought a case of Fiji water and a 12 pack of soda with us at embarkation which lasted almost the whole 18 days. I noticed a drinking fountain/bottle filler on Deck two, near the Queen’s Room, which was a nice touch. The outstanding feature of this cruise was the Cunard INSIGHTS lecture series. The speakers brought on to give presentations were top notch, and we attended them almost every morning. Mike Reiss, comedy writer, Robert Thirsk, former astronaut, Jan Williams, women in STEM, Professor Doug Burgess, Pirate history, Sylvia Acevedo, rocket scientist, Dr. Thomas Duryea, Panama Canal expert, Chase Untermeyer, former US Ambassador to Quatar, and MyKayla Skinner, Olympic Silver Medalist, all had fascinating presentations. Musical groups were talented and wide ranging, with something for every taste. We loved the “Blackthorn Irish Folk Duo” master balladeers who enthralled us with song after song of Irish lyric melodies and the native lore that went with them. Singing and clapping along with them was a joy! We love you guys! Formal nights were fun, and we enjoyed dressing for them and getting pictures. The dancing offerings were plentiful; line dancing lessons by Charles Evans,(brilliant!), and ballroom classes with professional dancers Daria & Yevhen from Ukraine. Well done all around, Cruise Director, Sally Sagoe! We did a few shore excursions that we had pre-arranged on our own. We did the Camel ride through Cactus Tours in Cabo San Lucas. They are an hours drive out of town, so if you go give yourselves a couple of hours to get back to the ship. We did a small van tour with Odyssey Day Tours in Puntarenas, Costa Rica; it was air conditioned and had Wi-Fi. We enjoyed interacting with the monkeys in the wild. The passage through the Panama Canal was the experience of a lifetime. What a thrill! Read up on it before you go, or at least attend the lectures onboard, and you will appreciate it that much more! Pre-Order the photo department’s video shot during the voyage. It’s a terrific souvenir, including drone footage, and it’s ten dollars less when ordered before the passage. Check that every image you chose and paid for is on your flash drive before disembarking the ship. Curacao had a wonderful shop, Heinen Delfts Blauw, that sold blue and white ceramic pottery, household things, and jewelry. The bracelets are made in Amsterdam, hand painted, quite reasonable and very pretty. I wish that I had bought more of them! In Aruba we went swimming and snorkeling with the turtles, which was a kick! Marcus of Underdog Divers Aruba treated us well and got some great videos. The water was amazingly clear. A couple of things that we didn’t appreciate were $11.50 for a virgin Pina Colada, (Really?!), and $44.00 a day for internet service. We purchased 2 days only for an important conference held while we were at sea. Though overpriced, the Starlink connection worked beautifully. We had a delightfully memorable vacation. Would we sail with Cunard again? You bet!
