Nieuw Statendam

Fluid lines and dramatic spaces make the Holland America Nieuw Statendam a modern beauty. The second in the line of Pinnacle-class cruise ships, its design draws inspiration from the elegant curves of musical instruments. When not relaxing in well-appointed suites or staterooms, guests will have a multitude of innovative dining and entertainment options—from Rudi’s Sel de Mer to Nami Sushi to the Rolling Stone Rock Room, B.B. King’s Blues Club, and the visually stunning two-level World Stage.

Best Cruise Ship Awards

Nieuw Statendam’s inspired design and entertainment options earned it Best New Cruise Ship and Best Mid-Size Cruise Ship awards, among other accolades. Passengers and cruise critics love this sublime ship.

Ship Reviews

Everything was perfect one this cruise. The fine dining in the restaurants was very good (we tried 2 of them however they all use the same kitchen, just different types of food, I'll assume the others are the same high quality), the 9th floor Lido deck buffet area had many options. The 3 stages with music acts were OK however the band at the larger BB King Blues stage was fantastic. As a smaller ship and older crowd not many kids. Don't expect the huge shopping options like a huge ship. The casino was fun. We even did an art class but that didn't go so well. The art classes always filled up snd held about spaces for 25. Now the part that didn't go so well for us in art... the instructor tried origami and I think it was her first go at teaching this. My guess is they will work out the kinks pretty quick as the director was watching. Staff was great. Locations were fun and you could spend time in the port area of explore further. We enjoy seeing the history and learning about the locations, this cruise was great for that. When we got home, yesterday, we both felt like we were gone much longer than 7 days. Highly recommend this cruise and cruise line.

In short, the back-to-back on this ship over the Christmas holidays was great on the first leg, and too many rugrats and teens as families piled on the ship on the second. The ship's condition is excellent, and the staff is 99 percent top-notch, which has to be as good as it gets for any cruise line or ship. The food is medium to great: the salad section on Lido is excellent, ethnic foods are inviting, and the MDR was far better than most, with good choices and solid execution of tasty dishes. Room service was on time and enough of an incentive for you to only get coffee and head to the Lido. The first week included great ports, as did the second. We took advantage of shore excursions booked through the ship at nearly all ports, the best being the one at Cozumel, where we went with Alexandro's tequila, show, and lunch. The tour included a seminar on all the various types of liquor, sips on each, and the opportunity to buy a bottle of the hooch. Next was a show which was professionally staffed with great performers, followed by a terrific lunch. The enthusiasm and courtesy of the guide and all his choreographed staff were great. We did the Classic Car tour in the Dominican Republic, which offered a four-hour ride in a classic car from the 50s or 60s. True enough, there were a dozen old clunkers in nice condition, and ours was a 1948 Chrysler Imperial with an accommodating driver. The shortcoming was that the four stops on the tour left us walking for about 2 hours around the city to various spots, and we had to wait about 45 minutes for our driver to pick us up at the Amber Museum, with his excuse being that there was heavy traffic. Pretty dumb. He should have been there; the other eleven drivers picked up their customers. We wanted to ride, not walk. We are geezers with two new hips and a bum knee between the four of us. We've got enough walking on the ship. The Everglades tour promotion in Miami featured an airboat carrying four people, soaring through gators and snakes. The reality was a low-slung barge with a low roof that required a contortionist to enter, and it constantly stopped and started so the tour guide could deliver a convoluted lecture about the environment. We could get that on our own without paying for it. Change the ad for the Everglades tour, or change the reality. The gator show was fun. With dozens of cruises under our belts, this was the easiest to board and leave that any we have experienced before on multiple cruise lines. The noise from the music at the pools was excessive and not a peaceful experience. When an officer was asked to make an adjustment, he immediately took action with the disc jockey at the adult pool, who was playing for two teenage girls who were dancing in front of him, to lower the volume. The duo of piano players was outstanding in the Billboard, and the classic trio playing was excellent. The World Stage shows were fine, and the performers were talented. The BB King Allstars were outstanding. Holland America's excessive charge for wifi is incentive enough to skip contact with the world while you travel. A person left the ship at about 3 am on New Year's Day, and whether it was a voluntary or involuntary departure is still unknown. As a result, they spent a predictably fruitless 15 hours searching the area, which led to the port stop at Key West being skipped. The Coast Guard brought an FBI team out to the ship as we treaded water about five miles from Miami, the night before we docked, which added to the guest entertainment and enhanced the murder-mystery aspect of this cruise. Overall, the guests on Holland America are an upgrade to Royal or Carnival and about equal to Celebrity.
