My husband (David) and I (Carol) took our first cruise on NCL earlier this month. They recently started sailing out of Philly, and that's really convenient to our South Jersey home. We enjoyed this cruise! Embarkation: OK, so they don't actually have a port building yet, which is not terribly convenient. We had to check in at a hotel whose ballroom was converted to a massive winding line of cruisers eager to get on the ship. Parking at the hotel was available with an option to pre-pay and I paid $112 (for a 7-day cruise) a couple of days before the cruise. Warning about the so-called parking lot--it is full of potholes and broken glass. Hopefully the parking lot at the new pier will be an improvement. We were assigned a check-in time of 12:30 and arrived about 12:15. The line was quite long and it took about an hour to get through it. My husband, who has really bad knees, was able to find a seat in the ballroom and waited for me there. It would have taken a lot longer if one of the port employees hadn't directed me to the "ADA line" for people with mobility issues which was a lot shorter than the regular line. David had contacted Norwegian before the cruise to ask about accommodations for folks with mobility issues and was told there were no "priority" accommodations available to seniors unless they paid for priority embarkation/debarkation (which he declined) or otherwise qualified for it by loyalty or cabin status--but he was still able to sit while I stood in the ADA line until it was our turn to get our cruise cards. From there, we sat in another ballroom until a bus arrived for a 15-minute shuttle to the ship. There was no line to board and we got on the ship at about 3PM. We hoped that the MDR would still be open for lunch (so nice that it is open on embarkation day, unlike the other cruise lines we have sailed with!) but it was already closed, so we headed for O'Sheehan's. I'm not sure if the buffet was still open, but I like to avoid the buffet on embarkation days because it always tends to be overcrowded and crazy. O'Sheehan's is open 24 hours and we found an open table immediately, so we had waiter service and some decent Reubens in a nice pub atmosphere. It was about 3:30 or so when they announced that cabins were ready. Cabin: Pleasant surprise! I am a (former) balcony snob and I had never booked an inside cabin. Our cabin was small but there was plenty of closet space and storage for the 2 of us. The shower was actually much larger than any that we had on other cruises and there was plenty of shelf space in the bathroom. David said he missed having a balcony (not being able to see what the weather was and not being able to drink his morning coffee outside), but I was just fine with it. Dining: Some hits, some misses. Anyone ever order Eggs Benedict only to have them arrive looking like they'd been sitting around for awhile? That has happened to me on RC and Carnival (until I got wise and started ordering them with the sauce on the side). NCL served me perfectly runny poached eggs for 5 days in a row--boy was I amazed at consistently perfect Eggs Benedict. Other memorable dishes include a scallop au gratin appetizer (excellent!) and lamb shank dinner entree (rich and delicious). David said the burgers at lunch were great although they looked too well-done to me. All the desserts I ate were excellent. The menu in the MDR was not extensive but I don't recall ever leaving there hungry or without finding something that wasn't really good. I was sort of surprised that they didn't actively offer coffee after dinner but if you ask for it they will get it for you. I was not as impressed with the buffet, which was small in comparison to the larger ships we have sailed on. Their breakfast omelet stations were fabulous but the rest of it was mediocre. We did not visit the buffet for lunch so I can't comment on it. We did walk through the buffet during dinner hours to see what was being served but we always opted for the MDR instead so I can't comment on the buffet's dinner service. I was quite surprised to see a whole suckling piglet on the carving station one night and I have to say it looked pretty good! Overall, we enjoyed the MDR the most. There was a secondary MDR, Azura, which served the MDR menu but in a different, more relaxed venue, and we had dinner there a couple of nights and enjoyed talking to cruisers who were seated closer to us than in the MDR. Ports: our stops included Bermuda and Halifax. On the first day of Bermuda, David took the free dockyard trolley and did a few stops at the dockyard that didn't require a lot of walking. I took the complimentary NCL ferry to St. Georges and walked around a lot. Tip: if you take the complimentary NCL ferry, go up to the second floor and the seats are much more roomy and comfortable and the air conditioning is much better. It's about a 50 minute ride to St. Georges, and the ferry drops you off in the thick of things. I walked to the "unfinished church" which is really stunning. Then I walked around the shops--there were beautiful artist shops that were wonderful. I ran into a great vintage shop, "Checkmate Vintage", where I bought a previously loved Swizzle Inn T shirt and a pair of real Bermuda shorts. On the second day that our cruise was docked at the Naval Dockyard in Bermuda, my husband and I took the free dockyard trolley; it does a fairly short circular route around the popular spots in the dockyard and it stops very close to the ship. He stayed on and I got off because I wanted to go to the Dockyard Museum and Commissioner's House. I was impressed--and saddened--by the displays that described the harsh conditions of the early seafarers and settlers and the role of slaves that were so critical to the development of Bermuda. There's a lot of history to learn about if you don't mind a lot of walking. There's also a dolphin pool and you can swim with them for an additional fee. I hitched a ride on the free trolley and got back to the ship well before our 3PM sailaway. After a sea day, we arrived at Halifax at 7 AM. Our sailaway time was 1 PM so we didn't have a lot of time--most businesses opened at 9:30 or 10, so we left the ship at about 10 and walked along the harbor. We didn't do much, although I would have liked to have gone to the Maritime Museum if we had more time. Oh well, maybe next time! We stopped at a brewery near the pier that featured Canadian beers and enjoyed a draft at 11 AM...breakfast of champions! Entertainment: the magician was very entertaining and he had 2 different shows that we went to. I went to the "Welcome Aboard" show and it was just ok. We went to the first broadway-type show and left after 10 minutes because it was way too loud and not very good (David's Apple watch was warning him that the decibel level was over 90). We did not return for any other musical shows. The quality of the shows was not on par with the shows we have seen on RCL. The entertainment in the bars was very good. We enjoyed the various music that was presented during the day and early evening. We didn't go to any late-night parties so I can't comment on those events. We also didn't go to trivia, bingo, or other usual daytime activities. We did not get the drink package because we are not big drinkers; I had only 1 traditional gin martini from the martini bar after dinner one night and it was REALLY strong! Nice! Service: Very, very good. The cabin steward and dining staff were very attentive and deserve credit for great service. Something else I wanted to mention: I expected fewer kids on this cruise because it's a smaller ship and doesn't have a thousand slides and bumper cars. There were a lot more kids than I expected, but I have to say that most were very well-behaved! (Am I the first person to say this on Cruise Critic?). Congrats to the parents who did not allow their kids to run rampant through the halls at 2 AM or push all the elevator buttons. I avoid the fitness room and the spa at any cost, so I can't comment fairly about those things. I did notice that there were many spa events that appeared on the daily planner and when I passed by the gym, it looked decent and the folks using it looked understandably miserable. We enjoyed this cruise! It wasn't perfect, but it was relaxing and there seemed to be something for everyone to enjoy. I am looking forward to cruising again from Philly with NCL!
Being one point short of Platinum, I hopped this Philadelphia based cruise at a really cheap price for a solo traveler (from an online agency) while my spouse was going out of town with friends. I was able to upgrade from an inside cabin to a porthole Oceanview for the minimum bid of $60 (2 x $30). I have no idea how the algorithm works; I do have the NCL credit card but not asking questions... Embarkation in Philadephia was through the Clarion airport hotel. I took local transit (SEPTA) to the airport, then a $20 Lyft to the hotel. I clould have continued on a city bus, but the stop is across the road from the hotel and there is no crosswalk or traffic signal and it was a hot day (80s). I carried my bag on but the workers were at the entrance for bag check. I arrived just before 1:00 pm for my 1:30 checkin and was funneled into the ballroom, never asked when my assigned time was; you get handed a slip of paper with a bus assignment on it. About an hour later I was through this line and off to the the bus waiting area. There is a long line of buses occupying most of the driveway into the hotel. About four of us were directed to take the handicapped shuttle (okay, it was sitting there). Sounded like a great idea until the driver took a curve a little quick - a passenger "secured" in her wheelchair fell over sideways. So much for a great idea, No major harm thankfully and we were moving again about ten minutes later, Welcome to Philadelphia! The "dock" is between the airport runways and the Delaware River near the UPS facility. Here you go through security including x-raing your carryons. I had a bottle of wine which they spotted and was sent over to the booze table. The asked if I had wine, of course I did, but instead of being charged $15, they said, okay, have a good trip. I had declined the Free at Sea and was prepared to pay, but thanks! Onto the ship up a ramp to deck 6 and a hard left turn into air conditioning. I checked in at my muster station (15 seconds) and on to my room, furthest forward deck 5 port side. Size of the room was decent, it was clean, the porthole let in a lot of natural light. I was below the entrance to the theater but was never bothered by noise. The housekeeping storage was an occasional nuisance (but I'm traveling cheap, all in all pretty good). Close to stairs and elevators. Up to the Garden Cafe at about 3:00. not overwhelming crowded, very limited food at that time, and a probelm that was chronic all week - ice dispensers were empty. Pretty much EVERY day, they'd run out. You shouldn't have to go to the bar to get ice for your drink. Entertainment on this cruise was not good. Low budget musical performances in the theater. No comedy shows. A "magician" whose act was pretty much "is this your card" for 45 minutes. Usual game shows including a really overacting couple on the newlywed game wearing matching pineapple outfits determined to tell us all about their private behaviors. "Welcome to Philadelphia". The cruise director, Brynne, is American and did a nice job. I'd been on another cruise with her. The ship's bands were very good. Always a long line at Starbucks. The gym could be crowded around 8am but not terrible. At the latitudes cocktail party they told us there were about 2450 people on board, which is 100 more than the stated capacity using two per room. LOTS of families, LOTS of kids. And they were pretty well behaved. Pools were crowded with people actually swimming. Deck chair availability was typical. Hot tubs always full. I had breakfast and lunch in the cafe, and dinners in the MDR. Between the lack of variety and some outright bad entrees in the MDR, disappointing. Desserts in the cafe are just gross, weird cakes and jell-o. On the plus side, the Great Outdoors usually put out cookies around 3pm. I also never had a wait for dinner longer than 10 minutes, arriving around 7:00 each night. Bermuda was beautiful, we had good weather and the ferry to St. George's had plenty of room. It seemed like so many of the passengers were fairly new to cruising that they didn't try to do much, or maybe with all the kids they just went to the beach. Leaving Bermuda we had lousy eaterh and highs eas crossing through the gulf stream. The sea day was not at all conducive to being on the pool deck betweem the strong winds (50 mph) and relative chill, Halifax was weird (not the city, the stopping there). 7 am arrival time, 1:00 departure, all aboard at 12:30. I am NOT getting up to take an excursion at 8:00 am Atlantic time (some were earlier) so I walked around the waterfront and up near the citadel. The price for the low efforts hop on hop off bus, or the Harbor Hopper (duck tour) through the ship were very high and you couldn't apply the $50 port credit to at least one of them. Why bother stopping there? Going back to Philadelphia we quickly got back into bad weather, high winds and waves. Down on lowly deck 5, the noise from waves hitting the hull was nonstop. More of an annoyance during the daytime than at night; I had no difficulty sleeping. The pool deck was cmpletely shut down, no pools, chairs, hot tubs; the walking promenade on deck 7 was closed off. Much less noise on higher decks and probably interior cabins. A couple of other comments - as someone from the area, I looked forward to the departure down the Delaware River. The reality was passing power plants and industrial sites. It was not inspiring. The Commodore Barry Bridge is not the Verrazano Narrows (nor is the Delaware Memorial). There were nowhere near as many scooters as I see on other cruises. The people generally were all happy to be there, no confrontations at guest services that I saw. On the social media meet and greet type site, there were more than a few people complaing that their "duck mailbox" had been stolen from their cabin door, blaming it on the kids on baord. I have my doubts... I didn't see many ducks on the ship desite claims of people brining literally a humdred or more. Disembarkation was pretty east for me as I carried off my bag. Lined up at 7:15 am, retinal scan on deck 7, down to deck 6 for the same ramp we came in on. Then onto a bus (they stow your suitcase) to either the Clarion hotel (if you parked there) or to the airport Terminal C for any other way home. I hopped my SEPTA train and was home in about an hour and a half. Not sure how things will work when the port is opened up; it's tucked away on narrow roads kind of like Bayonne years ago.
