NCL does not disappoint. The ship's common areas have been redone and are beautiful. There are many activities during the day, most of which center around the atrium. There is nothing going on after midnight, though. The specialty restaurants offer great service, and the food is a step above the dining room. The dining room only has 2 menus for lunch, that they rotate. Dinner is very good, but many of the options stay the same, or similar. The cruise director, Merlina, is wonderful and has a real presence on the ship. The staff are all excellent. Our cabin steward, Lin, was wonderful. The entertainment is still better than any others at this cruise level. Overall, it is a great ship for a relaxing voyage. The first 2 days and last day are chilly/cold, but there is plenty to do in the inside of the ship. The negatives, which are few, are: the theatre is small and if you arrive late or even on time, you will not get a seat. The 2 clubs on the ship have lines forming an hour before the performance, as they are also too small to accommodate everyone. The spa is very tiny, and they oversell the number of entries, so it is impossible to get a chair to relax on. The cabins have not been redone, so there are limited plugs and none near the beds. Some of the balconies are too tiny to accommodate 2 people sitting out there. Overall, this is a relaxing ship, and when it is not too crowded, perfect to enjoy 11 peaceful days.
Overall had an an excellent time on Norwegian Breakaway Christmas/New Year's vacation. Embarcation and disembarkation was a breeze. All restaurant venues from 5 Speciality retaurants, (Cagney's Steak House 3 times, Le Bristro, La Cucina, Tappanyaki, Palomar A+ in every venue) Taste, Savor, Manhattan, American Dinner, Garden Cafe (All were very good). Service was exceptional. Happy crew members all around! Cabin was very adequate with balcony. Cabin attendendant work very well with our scheduel. Plenty of storage for all of our clothes for 13 day cruise. Weather was excellent for our stops in Puerto Plata, Dominican Republic, San Juan, Puerto Rico, Basseierre, St. Kitts, St. Thomas, US Virgin Islands, Tortola, British Virina Islands, Philipsburg, St. Maarten. We did get off the of the ship at every stop and did explore the local shopping. Highly recommend this cruise at this time of year wihout the hassles of flying and dealing with airport delays, lost luggage and weather issues.
We booked this cruise over a year ago for ourselves and the family consisting of 2 sons, 2 daughters in law and 3 grandchildren 20, 14 and 5. With sapphire status, boarding was a breeze once past security. We had 4 inside staterooms together on 9th deck just forward of the forward elevators. Good location except for the dining rooms aft. Steward was excellent although we learned from him that NCL cut out turn down service and added 6 staterooms to his responsibility since they started up after the pandemic. Makes 18 staterooms to service every day. Rooms were normal size. If you use a CPAP, you need to bring an extension cord although the steward found one for me. We had 3 days down to the Carribean and 3 days back and we stopped at 6 ports. The kids did a couple of beach excursions. We walked off into town at all locations as we have done this itinerary several times. The towns had some sights to visit and cuisine to sample. A local beer was 4 bucks compared to 10 on ship. Entertainment was adequate. Much of it was duplicative of what we experienced on the Getaway cruise last year. The Fleetwood Mac show Rumors and the British Invasion concert were top shelf. The singer did two shows. Elton John and one through the years. Pretty good. A couple of the lounge singers did theme shows nightly. One of the three comedians was terrific. The dueling piano players didn’t have the personality of those on the getaway last fall. And they played every song till conclusion instead of shorter versions to expand the number of songs in a typical session. We ate exclusively in dining rooms when open except for two nights, one in Cagney’s and another at the sushi restaurant.. Food was good, not great. The American Diner on Deck 16 had the best burger. You now have to ask for baked goods. They do not put out baskets or walk around with them. Our biggest complaint is the layout of the ship. One of the lounge bars, Shakers, had probably 25 seats. The other center of activity, the atrium, was way too small to handle the shows, presentations and trivia’s. You had to get there an hour ahead of time , find a table and sit there till the activity you wanted to participate in started. There is no inside lounge up high with a view where you can relax with a book and a drink. The staff was very courteous and efficient. Our 5 year old grandson enjoyed the splash academy programs and the facilities. There were activities for the two older kids but they were happy chilling. Disembarkation went smoothly. We used the tags for the first group after the walkoffs. Luggage was there and once retrieved, the wait to get through border control was minimal. All in all, a typical Norwegian cruise. They don’t give much away.
