Ship Reviews

First time Princess cruisers! We booked the cruise last minute so our medallions couldn't be mailed to us so embarkation was long lines but went very smooth. We had a interior cabin which was cozy but actually bigger than some other cruise lines. The food was ok just wish there were more choices. The shows were good when we could get into them....they filled up fast and sometimes dinner ran long. Our room attendant was amazing and always greeted us with a smile. All the service workers were amazing. We loved the adult only pool area although it filled up fast as well. We loved that they played the football games and had some great movies ( old and new movies) too! Unfortunately, Princess is leaving Galveston. We live so close to the port, it makes it hard to fly somewhere to get on a cruise ship when there are so many cruise lines to choose from here.

I try to avoid school break cruises because of the crowds, but we wanted to bring our nieces, one a freshman in college and one a junior in high school, so we decided to take our chances on a New Year's Eve cruise. Service when ordering on the medallion was definitely a lot slower during the busy holiday cruise, but we made do with running down to the International Cafe for our lattes. (Keep in mind that the Princess Live cafe often has much shorter lines for coffee since few passengers know it exists, and sometimes we went there.) Other than that, we did not notice too much crowding on the ship. Having sailed on the Regal Princess 13 months previously, I would say that the food quality has gone down. But we did get lobster and prime rib on New Year's! My daughter and her husband, who also came on the cruise with us, figured out what the "two premium desserts" are that Princess Plus packages include. It's the gelato bar on the piazza on deck five. Nice to know. On our first night in the MDR, many of our six diners were served undercooked, crunchy carrots, chick peas, rice, and collard greens. I put in a complaint to guest services, and they were so responsive! They really cared! And they then delivered two lattes to our cabin really fast as a conciliatory gesture. I was very impressed by their concern. I think that the show times have been made earlier than they used to be. When eating at 7:30 pm in the Symphony dining room., it is only possible to make the shows at 9 pm by skipping dessert. I think the shows used to be at 9:30. Maybe Princess is trying to discourage cruisers from having a set dinner time every night? Entertainment was good. I really enjoyed the show "Fiera". The costumes and sets were magical and fun. The singing was very good. Certainly worth skipping dessert one night on Thursday of the cruise. My husband and two nieces REALLY liked the band Everlasting Now. They were groupies, following the band around the ship. Get to karaoke early to sign up; they say that no more can sign up when, actually, at the end of the sign up sheet singers, there IS still more time left. I believe that the same woman in charge of letting too few people sign up for karaoke also ran the scavenger hunt. After the first team got in and won, she left. The other scavenger hunters, who got back in the allotted time frame, were left to wonder where everybody went. We really like the mini suite cabins because of the extra room and because of the BATHTUB. So few cruise ships have bathtubs, and I love a hot bath at the end of a long day. We had cabin, and the sofa cushions have lost some of their "cush". Don't sit in the wrong place or you will feel the metal bar of the fold out couch beneath your tush. But you can request bathrobes and extra hangers on the medallion app! We really appreciated those touches. And having a retractable clothesline in the bathroom makes drying out bathing suits super easy. And you can go to guest services and order flowers for your room. The six yellow roses with filler cost $49.95, and they smelled pretty. But be aware, the vase belongs to Princess and you can't take it home. They don't make that clear. The poor lady ahead of me when departing had to hand it back. The light between the closet and the bathroom door is very bright, so it is easy to see your clothes. Unfortunately, it is motion activated, so it comes on at night when someone makes a visit to the bathroom. Then the person in bed gets a bright flash of light. We had scotch tape with us, so eventually I taped paper over the light every night so that my husband's visit to the bathroom did not wake me. Our visit to Costa Maya was switched months ago so that we had two days in Cozumel with an overnight stay. We LOVED having an overnight in one port; no worries about getting back to the ship on that first day. So we scheduled a private deep sea fishing trip. But the harbour master declared a red flag day, and we learned that our trip was canceled when we got to the marina. We quickly changed plans to go to the Money Bar, and we had a great time snorkeling there. They would not rent snorkeling gear because of the red flag warning, but we were free to join the other tourists in the calm waters off of their ladder into the sea. Since we had four sets of snorkel gear of our own, no problem. It was the first time that our nieces had ever snorkeled. As it turned out, when you get in the water from the ladder, the water is only chest high on an adult. So my nieces were able to stand up, adjust their goggles, then try snorkeling again, until they felt comfortable with it. And between the six of us, we saw barracuda, queen angel fish, tangs, sea fans, and a flounder. It was surprisingly good snorkeling for such an unassuming spot. The next day we went to Buccano's for about $20 per person, redeemable in food and drink. The water was too rough to go in, but we walked down the coast a bit and came back. Then we took a cab to my favorite jewelry store across the street from the Mega Supermarket. (All cab drivers know how to get to Mega.) The jewelry store has leather sandals and jewelry, so it's easy to miss seeing that it also has jewelry. It's such a tiny shop owned by a local grandfather who wants to leave it to his kids. I've shopped there so frequently with my daughters and nieces that I don't even need to haggle on the prices. Aim to get 20 per cent off the first quoted price. You will be supporting the locals instead of some big corporate chain, and all my daughters and nieces have had a hard time choosing among the beautiful selection. On Roatan, my husband found a private charter of a catamaran through Wicked. For about $175 per person for our group of six, we were able to have two leisurely snorkeling stops with snacks in between. To meet our driver, we needed to walk through the shopping center at port, head left when we reached the road, walk up the hill and then walk down the hill to the waiting drivers. The walk was probably 15-20 minutes. My husband did use the gym, and it was nearly impossible to find clean mats. The dirty bin was overflowing. He did find clean mats in a closet, but sometimes people would be exercising in front of the closet, so no access. The dress code on this sailing is "anything goes". I like cruising for the chance to play dress up, but dressing as a slob in the MDR is the rule. Baseball caps? Shorts? T-shirts? No problem. The last time we sailed out of Texas, we also noted the lack of care with clothing. Our next cruise is out of New Orleans; maybe those passengers will have more style. In general, when new would-be cruisers ask me which cruise line they should try, I say that they should start with Princess. They are a good, solid vacation value.

Let me start by stating this was a holiday week and we knew would be very crowded. The ship is nice. Food was average. Steaks and lobster always an up-charge. Do not recommend the Premium package unless you make your specialty dining reservations months in advance. We purchased it but did not get monies worth. We could not get into the specialty restaurants. Luckily we had 2 reservations. Thought Sabatini's was really good. Crown grill just ok. Buffet was fine but omelette station not good. First time had a forward cabin. Room good size. Only outlet is on desk. None in bathroom or on side bed tables. Balcony large but you cannot sit and see over and can be windy. We did feel some vibrations when seas were rougher but not bad. Never had a waiter at the pool. They were scarce. Bars always had long lines. Deck chairs were plentiful if you were there by 9-10am. Main pool was all kids but this was a holiday cruise. Retreat pool was adults only and a lil windy. Aft pool we did not use as smoking section back there. Concerto is the walk in restaurant but the lines were so long we never got in. Sabitinis is the traditional dining 5pm or 7pm. I would recommend. Three times we went at 5:15pm and they let us in. Loved our waiter! Shows were good except one. Voice of the Sea Karoke was great. 28 of 30 singers who tried out were good. 6 went through to finals. Great singers. The cruise director Giuseppe and Andrew his sidekick very funny. Pizza and burgers at pool jyst average. Gelatos had yummy ice cream and shakes. Embarkation easy. Disembarkation a bit long as we walked off. The Medallions are cool. Your room will open for you from down the hall. The bartenders etc have tablets and your picture shows up on it. They just confirm your cabin number. Your pictures will be attached to that medallion too. You can view them and download on your phone. New Years party on deck was so fun! They had football and movies under the stars. They had pickleball court too. We are pickleballers and played in Cozumel , Galveston and rained out in Roatan. All and all it was a good cruise and we had fun.

This was our first cruise, so we have nothing else to compare it to, however, we had a very nice time. There was plenty to do on the ship and many activities I wanted to participate in, but we were so busy with our port excursions and dinners that I didn't get a chance to take part in very many at all. However, the silent disco was a big hit for me and so much fun. I also really enjoyed the live music and dancing. The staff was helpful and friendly and the food was good. The beds were really comfortable. Our steward was quietly attentive in the background, always making sure that we had fresh towels and that our bed was made up nicely. The port excursions were fabulous and well organized and we really enjoyed our stops. This cruise made a believer out of us and we will definitely cruise again.
