Ship Reviews

We sailed on the Thanksgiving week cruise and had a great time. The ONLY downside was the embarkation process at Pier 21 in Port Everglades. I strongly recommend you take Princess' advice and arrive as late as possible for embarkation. Port Everglades requires all passengers go through security screening comparable to airline screening before entering the terminal itself. This means that 3800 passengers have to go through only 3 security lanes, which creates a *massive* backup even getting into the building. There is no special lane for Elite guests, only for Suites and Reserve Collection, and it only helps with the very end of the line. Baggage drop-off at the curb worked fine, and parking was at the adjacent parking garage, no problems there. It really was the monstrous, slow-moving line to get into the terminal building. Once through security, the actual process of checking in and boarding goes very quickly. As for the ship itself, we have been on all the Princess ship classes except the new Star class. Majestic is a Regal-class and so was very familiar. We actually liked the few remaining touches of its time in Asia, such as the English and Chinese lettering on signage. We walked through the Hollywood Conservatory and found it comfortable and quiet (though incredibly cold, the AC up there is powerful), though we understand it will be replaced with a Sanctuary-type environment soon ($$$). The whole ship uses the Princess Medallion technology, and it was flawless on our voyage. We love the ability to locate shipmates when we are not together. Internet connectivity via wifi worked perfectly throughout the ship. As for the crew, we found them to be just wonderful, as is typical of Princess. We found the MDR wait staff was predominantly Asian, perhaps a holdover from the time in that region. The International Cafe staff was super nice. When we were in line for Guest Services to help with an issue, a staff member jumped out with an iPad and was able to do everything we needed without having to wait. Room service staff always delivered with a smile. Really, nothing bad to say about any team member. There is evidence of cost-cutting in many areas, but that is not the crew's fault so not worth complaining about. My general feedback on having a good cruise is to manage your expectations about how they can handle moving all the guests at once: When arriving at a port, everyone heads to the buffet at the same time -- it's a madhouse for getting food and finding seating. There's not much they can do about that, so try using a dining room if one is open or just go early or late if you don't want to have a stressful experience. The ship was very nice and quiet on port days (we don't always go ashore). I know this ship gets a lot of critical reviews, but I just don't understand why. Compared to other Princess ships we have sailed on, it is every bit as nice as any of them and the crew was above average in our view. The only downside is embarkation which isn't the fault of the ship or the crew. With the Star class ships now using Terminal 2, perhaps Princess can build another terminal that works better for handling embarkation.

We thoroughly enjoyed our 2 week cruise down the east coast on Majestic Princess. The Majestic Princess is the perfect ship for this itinerary as it offers the Hollywood Conservatory which, unlike some other Royal class ships, is closed in and protected from weather. This helps spread people out and we took advantage of this area a lot. We had mostly cool fall weather on our trip, it did not warm up until we hit Norfolk. We initially were attracted to this itinerary as it offered a rare 2 day stop over in New York city at the Manhattan Cruise terminal pier 88. This left you walking distance to all the things NYC has to offer as your are literally 1 mile from times square. We thoroughly enjoyed all our stops but Saguenay was the one that surprised us with amazing friendly locals, the beautiful fjord, and a lot of interesting history. We have sailed on many other cruise lines and find what attracts us to Princess is their itineraries, not their ships, and this trip was no different. We also find the demographic on Princess a little older and as 60 year olds we were definitely helping to bring down the average on this trip. The public areas in ship are in excellent condition but I would say the carpet in our room needs replacement. Because of the port intensive itinerary we found ourselves quite busy during the days and at night we wanted to watch the World Series. Consequently we did not go to any of the shows in the theater. We ate every night in the Allegro dining room and usually left contented but never wowed by our dinner. We found the service quite slow, it usually took 2.5-3 hours for dinner, this was another reason why we never saw a show in the theater as we could not make the early show. We had two specialty lunches in O'Malleys and Crab Shack(Crown Grill) and they were both just ok and not worth the extra cost. The World Fresh Market place was ok, we preferred to pick up something from the International Cafe if we just wanted a quick snack. While never rude, we found most of the staff to be quiet and subdued, especially in the World Fresh Marketplace. Embarkation, in Quebec City, was ridiculous as Princess did not spread out passenger with embarkation time slots. Consequently everyone tried to board at noon and a 1.5 mile ride from our hotel to the cruise terminal took 1 hour and 15 minutes due to traffic backed up at the terminal. Thankfully disembarkation went much smoother in Fort Lauderdale. My one complaint would be Princess lack of diligence with regards to hand sanitation. There was very rarely anyone asking customers to wash hands before entering eating establishments or wiping down hand rails and elevators. By the second week of our cruise most of our party had a cold and around the ship many passengers were coughing. They ran out of kleenex in week two, which was a pretty good indication of the general health of their passengers. I think all cruise lines would be wise to stay diligent with their sanitizing protocols. Overall we enjoyed our east coast cruise, it was an amazing itinerary, and the Majestic Princess was well suited to the weather.
