This was my fifth Royal Caribbean cruise, but my first cruise with a friend who is in a wheelchair, so a lot of this review will be around that part of the experience. We took a 3 night cruise out of Miami to Cococay and Nassau, but we didn't get off the ship while at Nassau. First of all, the layout of the ship itself is pretty thoughtful from an accessibility standpoint. Most corridors are pretty wide, floors are generally pretty even, and the lanes between tables at the Windjammer buffet or elsewhere on the ship are wide enough for a wheelchair to fit through. HOWEVER, the elevator situation was pretty bad. It became very frequent to have to wait for several elevators to come and go before we found one that could fit a wheelchair. Sometimes, we would pick an elevator that was going down when we wanted to go up just because it was the only one empty enough to get in. We waited as long as 15 minutes to find an elevator one night. Newer ships, like Utopia of the Seas, which has a system of elevator assignment based on the floor you want to go to, seemed to manage crowds better. I must also say, most other guests on the ship were generally pretty rude, and it was clearly something that had taken a toll on the crew before we even got on the ship. This crew was the least friendly I've ever seen on a Royal Caribbean ship. Yes, most were friendly, but many didn't go out of their way to say hello like they have on my previous cruises. Some bartenders in particular were not friendly. From an accessibility standpoint, when an elevator would open on our floor, the people in the elevator would just stand there and hope we didn't get on with them, and very few would try to make space. They would frequently stare at my friend as if they had never seen a wheelchair before. I have very few kind things to say about the other passengers on this ship, so I'll sum it up like this - If you are ok crashing the local Miami party you weren't invited to, this is your ship. Otherwise, sail out of a different port. Our cabin - we booked an accessible inside facing balcony room that overlooked the Central Park. The room was impressively large, plenty big enough to navigate a wheelchair through. The door to enter the cabin was automatic, which made it easy to get in and out of the cabin, and it was pretty close to the elevator, which was also nice. The shower was a roll in, and rather than a door, it had a shower curtain, which meant we had a larger shower than most will have on a cruise ship. The shower had 3 separate shower heads, one overhead that poured straight down, one faucet style that sprayed at an angle and was about hip height above the ground, and one hand held shower head. Both the overhead and the hand held shower heads could be twisted to increase or decrease the shower pressure. This was the nicest shower configuration I've seen at sea. All of us in the cabin were happy with it. There was also a bench that could be raised and lowered for accessibility if someone needs to sit to shower. Accessibility at Cococay - very solid. Getting on and off the ship with a chair was less difficult than I expected. It is a sloped ramp, so be careful and ask the crew for assistance if you need, but it was doable. On the island, most paths between the ship and Oasis Lagoon are paved. We went to South Beach, which is past Oasis Lagoon, and they had beach wheelchairs and strollers available to take, first come first served. The beach wheelchair was easy enough to navigate and was loads easier to push through the sand than a typical wheelchair. I will say, though, that we got off the ship first thing in the morning. I don't know how quickly these wheelchairs get taken. If you want to get one, get off the ship early to ensure you can secure one for the day. Other thoughts on Wonder of the Seas - very few people took advantage of the Main Dining Room. We were on deck 3 (lowest deck for the MDR), and it was MAYBE half full at most on the busiest night. Our wait staff was great, as they usually are. Pool decks have plenty of chairs, and the public spaces were kept clean. The shows we saw were solid. The typical Royal Caribbean staples are all here - Sorrento's pizza, Crazy Quest, massive casinos, water slides, and way more. If you have sailed on an Oasis class ship before, this will be similar to what you'd expect on other Oasis class ships. If I could do it over, I'd book Utopia of the Seas rather than Wonder of the Seas. I was on Utopia in March, and I felt that most of the experience was a half step above what Wonder offered. That being said, Wonder of the Seas sailings are typically cheaper than Utopia's for the same itinerary and a very similar ship. So if the lower upfront cost gets you on the ship, Wonder is an absolutely amazing ship and you'll have a great time so long as you have the right expectations.
We found a just under 600$ interior stateroom for a 4 night sailing and for that price, I have nothing to complain about. The cheap room tag did come with a catch, it was in the front of the ship and one of the days we felt the waters maybe more than someone in the middle or back of the ship. The ice show and the aqua theater show are simply amazing. I would call them the highlight of the ship. They had two comics on board, one was amazing, I found one to be just okay but that’s personal preference. Main dining had a few really standout dishes, others were just average food. My wife is more of the fine-dining experience person so we had dinner in the main hall every night. The pizza place is really good. Like really good, and it’s open till 3am. There can be a line sometimes but it’s worth it. The hotdogs are also great but the person serving was not the friendliest. Nothing bad, just not as exciting as I thought it would be. We also do 2 Johnny rockers milkshakes each sailing using our crown and anchor awards and it was amazing. We don’t really drink so can’t give an informed opinion on the drinking. Only complaint: The Windjammer closes entirely too early! Who closes the buffet at 9pm!?
