I was nervous about this cruise because we are used to traveling on Royal’s larger ships, but it was a last-minute getaway so we thought we’d give it a shot. It was a great gamble! The cruise was a blast! Having said that, here’s my detailed review. The Cons: 1. My stateroom: this was the dirtiest stateroom ever. Our sanitizing routine usually takes about 20-30 minutes. This one took more than an hour. I know the ship is old, but that’s no excuse for grimy walls and the sticky unknown substance I had to scrub off the wall closest to the bed. The drawers were dirty, the cabinets were dirty. It was a all very gross. 2. Out stateroom attendant: this was the first cruise I’ve ever been on (and we’ve been on more than a couple dozen cruises) where the stateroom attendant never introduced himself. Apparently they staff this ship so thinly that the attendants have too many rooms to do the intro. You literally never see them. 3. The motion: I’ve been through thunderstorms in the Caribbean and Mexico on many cruises but I’d never felt more than a little movement. On this ship, I had many near falls — a particularly scary one in the middle of the night when I was in the bathroom and almost fell into the open shower. This ship is just too small. 4. The Royal Promenade: so narrow. It was tough to walk around leisurely because it was so crowded in the compact space. 5. The smoke: this ship had the coziest, most inviting Schooner Bar and Boleros Bar of any ship we’ve been on. I love these venues on other RC ships. However, on the Mariner these venues are at opposite ends if the casino so a non-smoker couldn’t sit in the bar to enjoy the music without gagging and coughing. It’s a shame, the talent was outstanding in both bars. 6. The smoke also made it hard to visit the venue for my favorite game shows in Studio B. Once inside Studio B you couldn’t smell the smoke, but the 30 minutes standing in line to get in was impossible so we left - I didn’t want to take the smell to bed that night on my hair. Ditto for standing at the photo gallery - the lingering smoke from the casino permeated everything. The Pros: 1. The entertainment: Royal never disappoints in this area. Even as the rocking of the ship made the ice skaters fall and the juggler drop his props, the talent was top notch. Nobody beats Royal for entertainment. 2. The food: consistently good. The service on Royal ships is always excellent as well. 3. The activities: never a dull moment. I always say that if you’re able to get bored on a Royal cruise, you won’t find any cruise entertaining. Royal activities are the best for all ages. So, yeah, we will sail on the Mariner again. We had a great time and I was sad to disembark. I’ll bring my Lysol and my wipes and my gloves and just budget the cleaning time. I’ll wear a mask to Schooner and Boleros and Studio B and hope that will be enough to stop the coughing. But really - Royal needs to either improve its ventilation system or go the way of other cruise lines where smoking is prohibited everywhere indoors.
This was my friend and my first time ever cruising and we both had an awesome time on the cruise. All of the crew are so pleasant and helpful. Everything is so organized from boarding to the departure. I loved the girls who greeted us at the Wind Jammer for dinner and the fun way they encouraged us to wash our hands every night. The dinner staff and the food was so amazing. Everything was kept clean and orderly All of the shows and entertainment were amazing. The singers, dancers, and orchestra are so talented. In addition, l can't forget, Collin, the awesome guy who tended to my room and kept it amazingly clean everyday as well as taking the time out of his busy day to make swans out of the towels and direct me as well as other lost cruisers to our destinations. Much to do. Thanks all
