We flew into SEATAC the night before the cruise and stayed at the Comfort Inn and Suites SEATAC Airport. The price was good and the free airport shuttle was quick. The room was very large and there were several fast food restaurants about 1/2 mile from the hotel. Only negative about the stay was that our room overlooked International Blvd and we could hear the road noise. In the morning, we took Seattle Express to the cruise port. The shuttle arrived at our hotel 15 minutes early. Upon arrival at the port, we gave our luggage to the porters (yellow vested porters were for Royal Caribbean, orange vested porters were for Celebrity who were also in port) and went straight to check-in. About 20 minutes later we were on the ship. At 1 PM the cabins opened up. We had booked an Ocean View Guarantee and received our cabin number 31 days before the cruise. For the difference in price from a balcony room, we would take this type of room again. The 3 foot round window provided us with a great view. Although the Voyager of the Seas is an older ship, we found her to be in great shape. We ate breakfast, and lunch, in the Windjammer Buffet and was always able to find something we liked. The staff, especially Christine and Joyce, were friendly and amazing. The made to order breakfast omelets were quick taking about 5 minutes each time we ordered one. As you enter the buffet, there are handwashing sinks, and a singing/dancing employee reminding you to "washy washy for yummy yummy" (aka wash your hands). The only negative aspect of the buffet was finding a table during popular eating times. The staff cleared the tables quickly, but lots of cruisers would sit and talk after finishing their meal. A little adjustment to our meal times solved the table issue. For dinner, we ate in the Main Dining Room. Once again we were able to find something enjoyable each night on the menu. They still offer Lobster Night (2nd formal night of the 7 night cruise). However, the lobster tails are small and limited to one per person. Highly recommend ordering a steak also thus make a surf and turf dinner. We have been to Juneau several times before so we just walked the town and did some shopping. We have also been to Skagway before so we decided to hike to Dewey Lake. The first part of the hike is a very steep climb with an elevation gain of about 800 feet. Definitely not for somebody with any mobility limitations. Upon reaching the lower lake, the city has a small floating pier, life jackets (stored in plastic bins), and a life ring if you want to take a swim in the lake. There are also towels left by prior guest. The water is from snow melt and is very cold. There is a shallow area you can walk in if you only want to get wet up to your knees. After a refreshing dip in the lower lake, you can continue to the upper lake and the waterfall. If you do both lakes, the hike is about 8 miles round trip with a 1,000 foot elevation gain. About 1/4 of the hikers we passed were crew members. The best part of any Alaska cruise is visiting a glacier. This cruise went to Endicott Arm and Dewey Glacier. To avoid the crowds on the deck 5 helipad, and deck 13 open deck, we moved some deck chairs to the railing on the starboard side of deck 4 (warning, portside of deck 4 is the smoking area). Instead of standing for several hours like the people on deck 5 and 13, we comfortably sat in our deck chairs, protected from the cold wind, and took turns doing hot chocolate/coffee runs. At the deck 11 towel station they have lap blankets that you can check out. Once the ship reached the glacier, it did a 540 degree turn and then headed back out of Endicott Arm. During our time in Endicott Arm we saw whales, seals, and bald eagles. The whole journey took about 4 hours. For activities on the ship there is rock climbing, ice skating, Flowrider (surf simulator), laser tag, shuttle board, 2 waterslides, mini-golf, and an outdoors sports court all included in your cruise fare. Ice skating, and laser tag, require reservations. Once on the ship, you can make the free reservations using the RCL app. In the evening, there were several audience participation gameshows, 2 production shows, a juggler show, two comedians shows, and live music. During the day, there was a presentation about Alaska and a presentation about Alaska's birds. Unlike most cruises which only spend a a couple of hours in Victoria Canada to meet the international port requirement, this itinerary spent 8 hours in Victoria. We took the short 1/2 mile walk from the pier to Fisherman's Wharf. We were disappointed to find only a few casual walk-up restaurants there, a souvenir store, and a handful of floating houses. It is nothing like the Fisherman's Wharf in San Francisco or in Monterey. The walk is easy, but for $10 you can get there by pedicab. If you have kids, there is a nice park with a playground near the entrance to the wharf. We took this cruise to celebrate our grandson's first birthday. Royal Caribbean provided a pack-n-play in the stateroom for him and highchairs at our meals. The crew was amazing with him and he had a blast. Definitely not too young to enjoy the cruise. For $189, we were able to buy the 100 photo package and now have lasting memories of the big event. You go to Alaska to see Alaska and this itinerary met that requirement The ship was a nice medium size and the crew was very friendly. Definitely a relaxing voyage.
Our extended family of 8 had a great time on this Voyager cruise. Although an older ship, it's in great order through its various refurbishments, and is very well maintained. We booked 2 inside cabins and 1 balcony cabin all close to each other. Recommend the balcony cabin. Had no noise at all. The Windjammer buffet gets a few mixed reviews here, but was probably the best buffet food of the 4 mid range cruise lines that we've travelled on. The MDR three level layout is stunning, genuine more classical cruise experience. We went there for Bfast and lunch too to avoid the peaktime Windjammer crowds. You can still order as many dishes as you want. Cafe Promenade still seems to be a ship 'secret'. Usually quiet & best pizzas ever on a cruise ship. Free coffee from 6am here and on deck 11. Recommend for families not couples.
Overall: the trip was excellent. We did not know that this was a “wiggles” cruise, that detail seemed to be well hidden from us when looking at cruises. There were a lot of families with kids, which is odd given that the first week was still within school time. We were told that a cruise with kids theme attracts more people and the ship becomes more full. There were definitely largish crowds - particularly in bad weather when the upper open decks were cleared. Sadly, compared to the kids on Carnival Encounter, the kids on Voyager of the Seas were worse behaved on average; playing on elevators, abusing condiments in eating areas, running&yelling down halls, and so on. The food was generally outstanding. The main dining area was amazing. The staff were very good. The room size was good. The bathroom was fine. Bedroom was comfy. The floor to ceiling window is a great alternative to a balcony. Were were on the top deck and it was fine, meclizine stopped all motion sickness. The ports: Luganville has a great market, but we did not venture much further because an earthquake killed power and water. Port Vila is ok. Mystery island was cancelled due to extreme wind. Noumea is beautiful and worth exploring further; tip: much better value tours can be booked where the boat bus stops. On board entertainment was mostly a hit with a few misses, mostly outstanding, but a few were pretty much high school level. Occasionally you will have some yob lean forward blocking your view while they chatted on SMS, or a bunch of people who insist on talking through the whole show - this can happen on any cruise, don't let armpits get on your nerve. I would not hesitate to recommend this ship, just avoid wiggles cruises or school vacation periods.
We had been on voyager before & loved that it was a bit smaller & more personal. they have since added waterslides, wave rider etc , so this is now a popular ship for kiddies. i'm a nana of 10, so love children, but this was very busy & noisy, even though it was school time. staff are beautiful & certainly make the cruise. we still had a great time, enjoying an aft sunset balcony & would definitely recommend. The night shows were very good & we found going to early dinner the best as we got to see everything without having to rush. Didn't think much of shops onboard, they certainly didn't have a lot to choose from. we didn't get a drink package & just buying a few when we wanted, worked out best for us. Enjoy our 2 allowed bottles of wine we brought onboard with us out on balcony.
